Dan Rubinstein – A Life of Art and Healing
Born in Israel in 1940 to Holocaust survivors, Dan Rubinstein's journey has been one of resilience, transformation, and artistic vision. At the age of 11, he began experiencing severe stiffness and pain, leading to years of hospitalizations and heavy cortisone treatments. Seeking answers beyond conventional medicine, he discovered the teachings of Rabbi Maimonides, which opened his understanding of nutrition, health, and the profound impact of food on body and mind.
His first major healing challenge came under the guidance of a naturopath in Haifa, who prescribed a 36-day water fast to cleanse his body of cortisone. After this intense detox, he slowly reintroduced food, starting with avocado, relearning how to chew and digest. This transformative experience led him to the renowned Bircher-Benner Clinic in Zurich, where Dr. med. Dagmar Liechti took him under her care, initially without charge. At that time, unable to walk, Dan's determination to heal was unshakable. Given pencils and colors, he painted his first piece—a pair of shoes—symbolizing his unwavering desire to stand again. Six months later, he took his first steps, eventually walking through the forest and back into life.
Through a series of serendipitous encounters, he met influential figures who recognized his talent and helped him exhibit his work. One such connection was Yehudi Menuhin, the legendary violinist, whom he met at the Bircher Clinic. Their friendship deepened, and Menuhin introduced him to the world of classical music, an influence that would shape his artistic expression. Over the years, other key personalities guided his journey, leading to major exhibitions, lectures, and commissions.
In 1971, after six years away, Rubinstein returned to Israel to reunite with his parents. During this visit, he went to thank the newspaper that had sponsored his first flight to Switzerland. As a gesture of goodwill, they gifted him a ticket for a one-day trip to the Sinai Peninsula and St. Catherine’s Monastery. There, in the vast desert landscape, he met his wife, Marta Rubinstein, an author. Together, they create books—she writes, and he illustrates. They built a life enriched by creativity and storytelling, raising two children: Edna Schur, a practitioner of functional medicine, and David Rubinstein, a city planner specializing in African development projects.
In 1994, Rubinstein inaugurated his first stained-glass windows at Misgav Ladach Hospital in Jerusalem, where the renowned Prof. Dr. Michael Stark, inventor of the "Jerusalem C-section," was chief gynecologist. This milestone opened doors to further commissions, including stained-glass windows for a Catholic church in Stäfa, Zurich, and many other projects.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Rubinstein’s true passion lies in connecting with people—feeling their essence, translating spirituality from the Bible, and channeling it onto canvas. His art goes beyond what the eye can see, capturing the unseen dimensions of life, faith, and human experience.
This is Dan Rubinstein—a visionary artist whose life and work are a testament to the power of healing, creativity, and divine connection.
